Max Siurala Award
In 1988 the Finnish Society of Gastroenterology founded an annual award in honour of Professor Max Siurala to recognize his distinguished scientific research in the field of gastroenterology.
Since 1993 the Award has included the Max Siurala Medal designed by Toivo Jaatinen. The Award is supported by Orion Pharma Finland.
Professor Siurala was born on 21 October 1913 and passed away on 6 September 2003.

IBD -the road ahead
Séverine Vermeire graduated as MD at the KU Leuven. Part of her training was done at the Universidad Nacional de Asuncion, Paraguay (1993), and at the Montreal General Hospital (McGill University), Montreal, Canada (2000–2001). In 2001, she obtained her PhD on Genetic Polymorphisms and Serologic Markers in Inflammatory Bowel Disease as a Fellow of the Funds for Scientific Research (FWO) Belgium. Part of her PhD was done at the University of Oxford, UK, at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics with Professor Derek Jewell. Since 2003 she was appointed staff member at the University Hospitals Leuven (Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology) and is appointed Professor of Medicine at the KU Leuven. She is Head of the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine et KU Leuven.
Her scientific work focusses on genetics and pharmacogenetics of IBD, on the role of the microbiome in IBD and on aspects related to immunogenicity of biological therapies. These research lines have resulted in >300 peer-reviewed full papers and an h-index of 76. In 2016 she was awarded an Advanced ERC Research Grant.
She served as Associate Editor for GUT from 2004-2010 and is currently Associate Editor for the Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis. Dr Vermeire is Past-President of the Belgian IBD Research and Development Group (BIRD) and Past- President of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO).
